FireWorks offers the following courses for healthcare institutions. 

These courses may be combined into a unique, site specific course to meet the needs of your institution.

Course Number: FW-700

Length: 4 Hrs

Title: Introduction to NIMS for Healthcare

Type: Classroom

FEMA Certification: IS-700

Description: This course provides participants with an overview of the Federal National Incident Management System. The program covers the NIMS material and puts it into the context of the healthcare organization. Material includes: how NIMS is structured; Incident Command and NIMS; the hospital’s role in NIMS; and integrating NIMS into existing plans.

All persons who complete this course will be allowed to take the FEMA IS-700 exam; those who obtain a score of 70 or better will receive a FEMA certificate of completion.

Other: Completion of this course meets Federal requirements for NIMS training for agencies receiving DHS funds.

 

Course Number: FW-195

Length: 2 or 4 Hrs

Title: Introduction to Incident Command

Type: Classroom

FEMA Certification: Self

Description: This course is based on the FEMA IS-195 course, "Introduction to Incident Command." The course length is dependent upon the needs of the hospital and the available time. Included in this course are the basic concepts of incident command, developing incident command, the role of incident command in NIMS, and hospital incident command systems.

Other: Students will be directed to the FEMA Independent Study web site where they may take the full course on-line and obtain a FEMA certificate of completion.

 

 

Course Number: FW-200

Length: 4 Hrs.

Title: Introduction to the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System (HEICS)

Type: Classroom

FEMA Certification: No

Description: HEICS was developed by the state of California to meet the specific incident command needs of hospitals. Many agencies find the HEICS system challenging to implement. In this course the process of implementation is explained along with how to develop the hospital’s emergency plans to include the HEICS material.

Other: This course will be revised to include the new HICS IV material when it is made public. This is anticipated to happen in March, 2006.

 

Course Number: FW-201

Length: 4 Hrs.

Title: Advanced HEICS

Type: Classroom/Participation

FEMA Certification: No

Description: This course continues to build on the information and skills learned in the FW-200 Introduction class. In this course the individual roles are explored in greater detail, and the process of developing plans for specific events is developed. During the class participants are given various scenarios to work through to better understand how to implement the system.

Other: This class is most appropriate for senior level managers who would be expected to fill the top level positions in the HEICS system.

 

Course Number: FW-202

Length: 2 Hrs

Title: Implementing the HEICS System Using HEICStrac

Type: Classroom/Participation

FEMA Certification: No

Description: For agencies purchasing the HEICStrac system this course provides instruction on how the system is used to facilitate implementing HEICS.

Other: This course is recommended to agencies purchasing the HEICStrac system.

 

Course Number: FW-204

Length: 4 hrs.

Title: "So You Want to be in Charge??!!"

Type: Classroom

FEMA Certification: No

Description: This course delves into the traits and personality of what makes a good incident commander. The material covers the qualities of leadership, examples of failures and successes, and making the transition from day-to-day to disaster command.

Other: Persons taking this course should be those who will be expected to assume leadership roles in an incident command system such as HEICS.

 

Course Number: FW-300

Length: Varies

Title: Hospital Emergency Operations Planning

Type: Classroom/Hands On

FEMA Certification: Self

Description: This program uses FEMA and JCAHO materials to develop an understanding of how to prepare and emergency plan that meets the federal requirements for NIMS,. And also meets the standards for the Joint Commission. The program varies in length depending on the needs and desires of the organization. Programs of 2 to 8 hours in length can be provided.

Other: Participants will be directed to the FEMA Independent Study program for the IS-235 Emergency Planning course. Upon completion of this course the student will receive a FEMA certificate of completion.

 

Course Number: FW-301

Length: 4 Hrs

Title: Developing a Risk/Threat Analysis

Type: Classroom/Hands On

FEMA Certification:

Description: This course begins with a review of hazards for the geographical area based on materials developed by FireWorks sources. The class then moves to a participation program where attendees will use software developed by Kaiser Permanente to develop a comprehensive risk-threat analysis for their organization. This analysis can be used to develop or refine the organization’s emergency operations plan.

Other: participants must have available a laptop computer with MicroSoft Excel spreadsheet. The application software will be provided for the participants.

 

Course Number: FW-400

Length: Varies

Title: Disaster Exercise: Table-Top

Type: Hands-On

FEMA Certification: No

Description: This program includes the development of a scenario that involves the hospital directly. The scenario is individually prepared using information from the hospital and local emergency management agencies. Each scenario is unique and is designed to test the response of hospital staff to a major disaster.

Other: We recommend this program be used at the conclusion of incident command training to test the understanding and application of the materials.

 

Course Number: FW-500

Length: 4 hrs.

Title: FOSTER: First-On-Scene/Training for Emergency Responders

Type: Classroom

FEMA Certification: No

Description: This course provides basic radiological training for first responders. The content focuses on the information first responders can actually use, not on theoretical. Included are identifying radiological materials in transport, initial actions, patient handling, and basic decontamination. This course is designed for all students, including those with limited hazardous materials training.

Other: FOSTER was initially developed for the State of Colorado for use in support of radiological shipping campaigns.
